How much do roof trusses cost?

Truss prices vary by region, plant and lumber market, so no single number fits every house. Here is what drives the price, and how to get comparable quotes.

What drives truss cost

  • Board footage. Lumber is a large part of a truss price, so total board feet is a useful yardstick for comparing quotes.
  • Span and pitch. Longer spans and steeper pitches add lumber, larger members and more plates.
  • Roof shape. Hips, valleys, girders and piggybacks add trusses, plies and hangers compared with a simple gable.
  • Loads. Snow, wind and attic storage loads can push members to larger sizes or higher grades.
  • Hardware. Truss-to-truss hangers and uplift connectors add cost beyond the trusses.
  • Delivery and market. Freight, local demand and lumber prices change quotes between plants and over time.

Get comparable quotes

  1. Get a FrameScope™ package: layout, truss count by mark, board footage by truss and hangers.
  2. Send the same package to two or three truss plants or dealers.
  3. Compare quotes against the same board footage and scope, and ask each plant to note differences.

In our sample package, a hip-roof residence came to 118 trusses and about 7,100 board feet, a starting point any plant can price.
